Shocking new details have emerged in the case of 8-year-old Cwecwe, as medical records confirm the child was raped and suggest possible repeated sexual assaults. The investigation has now widened beyond her school, with authorities collecting DNA evidence from multiple suspects in a case that has exposed critical failures in child protection systems.

Medical Proof of Repeated Assault

Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, revealed definitive medical evidence showing Cwecwe was sexually violated, potentially on multiple occasions.

“There is absolutely no doubt – medical examinations confirm rape occurred,” Chikunga stated during a press briefing in Matatiele. “Tragically, the evidence indicates this may not have been a one-time occurrence.”

Minister Chikunga demanded, characterising the school’s delayed response as unconscionable. The criticism comes amid reports that school administrators attempted to quietly transfer the victim without following proper procedures, further compounding concerns about institutional accountability.

The case has triggered a robust national response, activating South Africa’s enhanced systems for addressing gender-based violence. Specialized Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to assist with the investigation, while the newly implemented Femicide Dashboard tracks progress in the case.

The government has emphasised its commitment to resolving such cases within a strict 100-day timeframe, reflecting President Ramaphosa’s declaration of gender-based violence as a national crisis requiring a pandemic-level response.
