CPUT Student Appears In Court For Alleged Rape At Observatory Off-Campus Residence

A 24-year-old student from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court following allegations that he raped a fellow student over the weekend.
According to police, the alleged incident occurred on Saturday at an off-campus student residence located in Browning Street, Observatory. The suspect, who reportedly lives at the same address as the victim, was arrested shortly after the incident.
CPUT Student Case: Police Confirm Investigation Underway
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed the arrest, saying:
“The complainant is a 23-year-old woman residing at the same address. This case was transferred to Cape Town FCS for further investigation. A 24-year-old male was arrested.”
Authorities have handed the matter over to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Cape Town for further investigation.

Following the suspect’s arrest, tensions rose among students in the area. A crowd of approximately 200 students gathered outside the residence, demanding access to the suspect.
Van Wyk added that Woodstock police were assisted by the Public Order Police to manage the protest and maintain order in the area.
The university has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident, but the investigation remains ongoing.
