Court Sentences Mugabe To Jail Over Toy Firearm Incident And Immigration Offences

The Alexandra Regional Court, north of Johannesburg, has sentenced Bellarmine Mugabe to a combined prison term and fines following multiple offences, including pointing a toy firearm and violating immigration laws.

Mugabe received a 24-month prison sentence or a R400,000 fine for pointing a toy firearm. In addition, he was handed an 18-month sentence or a R200,000 fine for being in the country illegally.

The court clarified that the charge related to pointing a firearm stemmed from a separate incident that occurred two weeks prior to a shooting at his Hyde Park residence.

Mugabe Ordered Deported Following Sentencing

In delivering the sentence, Magistrate Reiner Boshoff ordered that Mugabe be deported immediately at his own expense.

The ruling follows the conclusion of legal proceedings tied to incidents that drew significant attention in the Hyde Park area earlier this year.

Co-Accused Receives Three-Year Jail Term For Attempted Murder

Mugabe’s co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, was sentenced to three years in prison for attempted murder.

The court also imposed additional sentences of 12 months each for contravening the Immigration Act, defeating the ends of justice, and possession of a firearm and ammunition.

These charges are linked to a February shooting incident involving an employee at Mugabe’s Hyde Park residence. The court found Matonhodze guilty on multiple counts arising from the same case.
