Court Sentences Mother Who Burnt Children With Hot Iron For Jumping On Bed

A disturbing incident in the Free State has led to a mother being sentenced for the heinous act of burning her children with a hot iron. The Welkom Regional Court recently dealt with this case where a 37-year-old mother was found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The court proceedings revealed the troubling details surrounding the incident that occurred on June 1, 2024.

Details of the Incident

The case involved three minors, aged 11 and nine-year-old twins, whose identities are protected to prevent secondary trauma. On the day in question, the children were reportedly engaged in playful jumping on the bed when their mother reacted violently.

She commanded them to place their hands on an ironing board and proceeded to burn them with the heated iron as a form of punishment. After the first incident, she sent her children to bed, but the disturbing cycle continued the following day when she inflicted the same punishment on one of the twins.

Legal Ramifications and Sentencing

Following these acts of child abuse, one of the children revealed the abuse to a school teacher, prompting immediate intervention. The teacher reported the matter to the police, leading to an investigation and subsequent conviction.

The mother received a four-year prison sentence, which has been wholly suspended for a period of five years on the condition that she does not commit a similar offense during that time.

Additionally, she is mandated to complete a parenting program and has been declared unfit to possess a firearm.
