Court Reveals Chilling Details Of KwaDukuza Traffic Officer’s Brutal Murder

The Durban High Court has heard disturbing details surrounding the murder of KwaDukuza traffic officer Mariemuthoo Marumugam, who was gunned down while responding to a hostage situation in November 2024.

Marumugam was killed on the N2 highway along KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast after being shot multiple times. The accused, Philakahle Dladla, appeared on Thursday as judgement proceedings began.

Dozens of road traffic officers, dressed in full uniform, packed the courtroom in support of their fallen colleague. Members of Marumugam’s family and relatives were also present, listening closely as the court recounted the tragic events of that day.

For many of Marumugam’s colleagues, the hearing marked the first time they learned of the gruesome manner in which he was killed. The judge revealed that the traffic superintendent had sustained four gunshot wounds to the head and one to the chest.

His brother, Bafi Marumugam, expressed the family’s pain as the detail of his death was revisited.
