Court Hears Mom Allegedly Sold Joshlin Smith For Sangoma For R20K

A witness in the Western Cape High Court has delivered shocking testimony, alleging that Racquel “Kelly” Smith finalised the sale of her missing six-year-old daughter, Joshlin Smith, just a day before she disappeared.

Secret Deal In Selling Joshlin Smith

Former accused Lourentia Lombaard told the court, which is sitting at the White City Multipurpose Centre in Diazville, Saldanha Bay, that Kelly had informed her about the deal on 18 February 2024.

“I watched Kelly walk up to a white VW Polo, where a black woman stepped out and handed her something. Kelly tucked it into the front of her pants. After talking briefly, Kelly and Joshlin walked away from the car and returned home,” Lombaard said.

Later, Lombaard claimed she overheard Kelly telling her boyfriend Jacquen “Boeta” Appollis that she had received R20,000.

“She told Boeta she had done something ‘shitty.’ When I asked what she meant, she said, ‘I sold my child to a sangoma.’

“I asked her why, and she said she needed the money and was going through hardship,” Lombaard testified.

Money in Exchange for Silence

According to Lombaard, Kelly then offered her money to keep quiet about the deal.

“She said she was going to give me R1,000, Steveno R1,200, and the rest would be shared between her and Boeta.”

However, Lombaard insists she never received any money from Kelly.

When she questioned how Joshlin would be taken, Kelly allegedly responded, “I’ll make a plan.”

Kelly, Boeta, and Steveno “Steffie” van Rhyn are all on trial for kidnapping and human trafficking. The case continues as more details emerge about Joshlin’s tragic disappearance.
