Court Halts R44 Million Payout In David Mabuza Estate Battle

The Mpumalanga High Court has placed a temporary block on the R44 million investment payout tied to the late former Deputy President, David Mabuza.

The court ordered Alexander Forbes Financial Services not to release the funds, which were reportedly earmarked for Nonhlahla Mnisi, who claims to have been Mabuza’s wife. The decision comes after an urgent application filed by Mabuza’s daughter, Tamara Silinda, who is challenging the payout.

Mabuza, who served as Deputy President of South Africa from 2018 to 2023, passed away on 3 July 2025.

David Mabuza Daughter Seeks Maintenance and Tuition Fees

In her affidavit, Silinda argued that she depended on her father’s support and medical aid. She is demanding R40,000 monthly maintenance to cover essentials such as clothing, transport, and medical needs.

She has also asked the court to compel payment of R127,990 for her annual tuition at the University of Cape Town.

Court papers reveal that Mabuza’s death certificate did not list him as married, raising questions about the legality of his relationship with Mnisi and her claim to the disputed investment.

At the centre of the case is a living annuity Mabuza invested with Alexander Forbes, which will determine who is legally entitled to benefit from the fund.

Judge Johannes Roelofse has requested that Alexander Forbes submit sworn statements by 26 September to clarify whether the money is held under a life insurance policy or a pension fund, noting discrepancies in the documentation.

Until these questions are resolved, the judge ordered the interim block on any payout to ensure the funds remain untouched while the legal battle continues.
