Couple Bags Life Imprisonment For Murder Of 93-Year-Old

A Gauteng couple, Pranavan Moodley, 32, and his wife Samantha, 34, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder and robbery of 93-year-old Yetsee Chan at his Edenvale home.

The couple was arrested and charged in connection with the crime, which occurred on September 23, 2020.

Investigation And Trial

Sergeant Madimetja Maluleke of the Ekurhuleni North Trio Task Team led the investigation, which revealed that the couple had entered the victim’s home while his son was away.

CCTV footage showed the couple entering and leaving the suburb, linking them to the crime.

Senior State advocate Maro Papachristoforou presented circumstantial evidence, including the footage, to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Sentencing

The South Gauteng High Court handed down the life imprisonment sentences for the murder, with additional sentences for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Moodley received 15 years, while Samantha received 12 years.

The National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Phindi Mjonondwane, welcomed the conviction, stating that justice have been served for the victim and his family.

He said, “The complainant left his father at home to go to the bank around 10.30am, leaving the gate open.

“Upon returning at around 11.45am, he found his father severely injured and tied up in the passage.

“The complainant immediately called their family doctor and paramedics.

“An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be severe head and cervical spine injuries, sustained during a violent assault.”

Further investigation by the police led them to a pawn shop in Benoni, where the stolen items from the house were recovered, linking them to the accused.”
