Councillor Assassinated: Eastern Cape MMC Gunned Down Inside Her Home

Police in the Eastern Cape have launched a manhunt following the fatal shooting of councillor Thumeka Bikwana at her home in kwaTshatshu.

Bikwana, 46, served as the MMC for Corporate Services in the Chris Hani District Municipality.

Councillor Found Shot Dead At Home

Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana said the gruesome discovery was made on Tuesday morning. A witness noticed the councillor’s driver waiting outside her property for an extended period after her vehicle was parked in the yard.

“The driver complained that he had been waiting for a long time, but the councillor was not coming out. The witness went to check and found the front door wide open. Inside, the deceased was lying on her back in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to her head,” said Gantana.

Police Launch Manhunt After Eastern Cape MMC Killing

Authorities confirmed that the motive behind the killing remains unclear, and no suspects have been identified so far. A murder case has been opened at Bholotwa SAPS, with the investigation now handed over to Provincial Organised Crime Detectives.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward via Crime Stop or the MySAPS App.

The killing comes amid ongoing concerns over violence targeting public officials.
Earlier this year, Lazola Gungxe, a councillor in the City of Cape Town, was shot dead at a community hall in Crossroads.

At the time, police said he was attacked by two men who entered the venue and opened fire before fleeing in a white Toyota Avanza without registration plates. Investigations into Bikwana’s murder are ongoing.
