Corrupt Cop Jailed: Stock Theft Unit Officer Gets 12 Years For R80k Cattle Scheme

A 44-year-old member of the South African Police Service’s Cullinan Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit has been sentenced to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for stock theft.

Herbert Maringa was convicted in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrates’ Court for stealing cattle valued at R80,000. The conviction follows an investigation that linked him to a theft operation dating back to 2019.

State Witnesses Link Officer to Theft Scheme

According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, the case emerged after a tip-off from a farmer who had unknowingly purchased stolen cattle.

“The matter came to light after police received a tip-off from a farmer to whom the stolen cattle had been sold. When the two individuals returned to the farm to collect payment, they were arrested,” said Mahanjana.

She added that the two suspects later cooperated with authorities and implicated Maringa.

“Upon their arrest, the two accused cooperated with the police and told the police that Maringa was involved in the planning of the offence and was escorted to the Gaudveld Farm, where there is an abattoir and butchery,” she added.

The witnesses revealed that Maringa had instructed them to steal cattle from Zonderwater Correctional Services in Cullinan.

Court Rejects Leniency Plea, Imposes Direct Imprisonment

During court proceedings, Maringa pleaded not guilty and denied any involvement in the crime.

In mitigation, his legal representative argued for a lighter sentence, stating that no financial loss had been suffered as the stolen cattle were recovered and returned to the Department of Correctional Services.

However, Regional Court Prosecutor Advocate Patsy Jacobs challenged this claim, presenting evidence that supported the State’s case.

“Jacobs opposed Maringa’s claim of no financial losses, arguing that he, as a police officer assigned to a stock theft unit, had a heightened duty to prevent such crimes and had instead abused his position,” Mahanjana said.

The magistrate agreed with the State, stressing the responsibility of law enforcement officers to act with integrity and protect the public.

In addition to the prison sentence, Maringa was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
