Correctional Services Breaks Silence On Thabo Bester’s Transfer To Ebongweni Prison

The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that convicted criminal Thabo Bester will continue to receive appropriate care while being held at Ebongweni Super-Max Prison.
According to the department, Bester’s transfer forms part of routine operational procedures and was conducted following a security risk assessment, as is standard practice within the correctional system.
However, Bester’s legal team has raised concerns about the move, stating that he was transferred to what is considered the country’s highest-security prison without prior notice.
Correctional Services Responds to Transfer Concerns
Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo emphasised that the transfer does not affect Bester’s rights or access to legal processes.
“The offender will continue to receive appropriate care in line with applicable legislative and policy prescripts and will retain full access to legal representation, family communication, and court processes.
All necessary logistical arrangements remain in place to ensure that court appearances and legal proceedings proceed without disruption.”

Legal Access and Court Processes Remain Unchanged
The department reiterated that despite the heightened security environment at Ebongweni Prison, Bester’s legal representation and communication channels remain fully operational.
Officials stressed that transfers between facilities are guided by security considerations and do not signal punitive action beyond existing court rulings.
