Cops Save Alleged Scammers From Angry Mob

Two suspected card scammers were arrested in Standerton, Mpumalanga, after being caught by an angry mob and assaulted before police intervened.

The scammers, aged 42 and 37, were fraudulent activities, including the theft of a woman’s bank card.

The community took matters into their own hands after spotting the suspected scammers in possession of the victim’s card and R1,800 in cash that had been withdrawn from her bank account.

Police Act Swiftly To Prevent Vigilante Justice

The two men were initially identified by local police after receiving a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle with Gauteng registration plates operating in the Standerton Central Business District (CBD).

Upon spotting the suspected scammers  at a filling station, the community members took action and began assaulting one of the men, who was reportedly holding the stolen bank card.

The police quickly arrived at the scene to prevent further violence and arrested the duo.

Police Urge Legal Action

Lt Col Jabu Ndubane, a provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the suspects were traveling in a hired white Volkswagen Polo Vivo, which was seized during the arrest.

They now face charges of fraud and theft.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of police in Mpumalanga, commended the collaboration between law enforcement and private security companies.

However, he urged the community to avoid taking justice into their own hands, emphasizing the importance of allowing the legal system to take its course.

The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Standerton Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
