Convicted Child Rapist Stabs Himself After Life Sentence In George Court

Drama erupted at the George Regional Court, Western Cape, on Friday afternoon, 26 September, when convicted child rapist Ian Hoggins (50) attempted to take his own life moments after being sentenced to life imprisonment.
Suicide Attempt Moments After Sentencing
Immediately after the court handed down a life sentence for the rape of a three-year-old girl, Hoggins stabbed himself in the neck in front of stunned onlookers.
He was rushed to hospital under police supervision and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Hoggins was found guilty in June 2025 of the rape of a three-year-old child.
In addition to the life term for rape, he received:
-
Five years for sexual assault
-
Eight years for possession of child pornography
The court ordered that all sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve a life term.
Appeal Bid Rejected
Before his suicide attempt, Hoggins indicated his intention to appeal the conviction and requested that his bail be extended pending the appeal.
The court adjourned briefly to consider the request but ultimately ruled that no compelling circumstances justified deviating from the prescribed minimum sentence.
