Commission Told Minister Mchunu Helped Identify Political Killings Task Team Officers

The Madlanga Commission has been presented with testimony alleging that attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala leveraged his influence to uncover the identities of two police investigators, identified only as Witness A and Witness B.

Testifying before the Commission on Thursday, Witness C revealed that Matlala had claimed Police Minister Senzo Mchunu sought the assistance of State Security to help him identify members of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), which was investigating him.

“He told us that the minister engaged state security on his behalf and utilised grabber machines in order to pick up the identities of the SAPS officials investigating him.

Mr [Brown] Mogotsi thereafter sent him the vehicle registration numbers of the vehicles that came to his property. Mr Matlala disclosed that this is how he came to know the identities of the two officers who played a key role in the operation,” Witness C testified.

Audio Reveals Matlala’s Comments on Cancelled SAPS Contract

The Commission also listened to an audio recording from 14 May — the day Matlala was arrested in connection with the attempted murder of his former girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane, in October 2023.

In the clip, Matlala could be heard explaining to three arresting officers, including Witness C, why he believed his R360-million contract with the South African Police Service (SAPS) was terminated.

The contract was reportedly cancelled after being flagged for irregularities following Mchunu’s appointment as minister.

Matlala can be heard saying he had written to Mchunu’s associate, Brown Mogotsi, regarding an affidavit he filed at the High Court, in which he intended to implicate the minister. Witness C confirmed that Matlala was aware that their informal conversation was being recorded.

“And also that he is going to implicate the minister because of his criminality … after he [Matlala] had refused to open a case against the team or the police, then the police cancelled his contract with the SAPS. He [Mchunu] had instructed General Fannie Masemola to cancel his contract,” Witness C said.
