CoCT Welcomes SANDF Deployment To Tackle Cape Flats Crime Surge

The City of Cape Town has expressed support for the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to assist in tackling escalating crime in the Cape Flats.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, said the intervention would bolster efforts to curb gang violence in some of the city’s most affected areas.

Smith was speaking after joining Operation Prosper teams during coordinated raids and searches conducted in Mitchells Plain over the weekend.

SANDF Deployment Targets Gang Hotspots In Cape Flats

Soldiers have been stationed in several high-risk communities across Cape Town as part of a broader strategy to address organised crime and gang-related violence.

The deployment forms part of Operation Prosper, a 12-month initiative officially launched last week to stabilise crime-ridden areas through joint law enforcement efforts.

Authorities believe the presence of SANDF members will strengthen visible policing and provide immediate relief to communities grappling with persistent violence.

Call For Stronger Investigations And Prosecution Capacity

While welcoming the intervention, Smith cautioned that the deployment alone would not deliver lasting results without improvements in the criminal justice system.

He highlighted the need for more detectives and better support for forensic processes, particularly in addressing backlogs.

“Of course, this is a stop-gap measure that is helping improve the short-term response, but in the long term, we will need to see more detectives and for us to start clearing the backlogs on forensic matters such as the firearms ballistics tests so that we can make sure the shooters we do catch are put away.”

Smith also stressed the importance of the National Prosecuting Authority fulfilling its role in ensuring that arrests translate into successful convictions.
