Media Giant Dies: CNN Founder Ted Turner Passes Away At 87

Ted Turner, the visionary founder of CNN, has died at the age of 87, marking the end of an era for global media.

Turner, who launched CNN in 1980, revolutionised how audiences consumed news by creating the world’s first 24-hour television news channel.

CNN Founder Ted Turner Revolutionised Global News Industry

Born in Cincinnati in 1938, Robert Edward Turner III rose from personal tragedy to become one of the most influential figures in broadcasting.

After taking over his family’s struggling advertising business, he expanded into radio before making a bold move into television with the purchase of an Atlanta station in 1970.

A decade later, he transformed that platform into CNN, reshaping the media landscape as viewers shifted from traditional broadcasting to cable television.

CNN gained worldwide prominence during the Gulf War, delivering round-the-clock live coverage that changed how wars were reported.

Turner Built Media Empire Beyond CNN

Turner’s influence extended far beyond CNN, with his media empire including channels such as TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies and Cartoon Network.

His success sparked fierce competition, including from rival Rupert Murdoch, who later launched Fox News.

In 1996, Turner Broadcasting merged with Time Warner, making Turner vice chairman of the powerful entertainment group.

The company later became part of a massive merger with AOL in 2001 — a deal that would ultimately unravel, costing Turner billions.

From Sports Teams To America’s Cup Victory

Turner was also a prominent figure in sport. He owned the Atlanta Braves baseball team, which won the World Series in 1995, as well as the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers.

In sailing, he achieved international success by leading the US yacht Courageous to victory in the America’s Cup in 1977.

His rivalry with Murdoch extended beyond media, famously spilling into the world of competitive sailing.

Beyond business, Turner became known for his philanthropic efforts and environmental advocacy.

In 1998, he donated $1 billion to the United Nations, leading to the creation of the UN Foundation.

Through initiatives like the Turner Foundation and the Turner Endangered Species Fund, he supported conservation and sustainability projects worldwide.

Turner stepped away from corporate leadership in 2003 to focus on philanthropy, continuing to influence global environmental efforts.

His personal life also drew attention, including his high-profile marriage to actress Jane Fonda.

Ted Turner leaves behind a legacy as a bold innovator who transformed television, challenged industry norms and used his wealth to support global causes.
