City of Johannesburg Spends R82 Million Restoring Lilian Ngoyi Street After Gas Explosion

More than two years after a devastating underground gas explosion tore through Johannesburg’s inner city, Lilian Ngoyi Street has been fully rebuilt.

The City of Johannesburg has already invested R82 million into the project, part of a larger R192 million budget dedicated to repairing and revitalising the precinct.

Despite the completion of major roadworks, the street will only reopen to traffic later this month. Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero conducted a site visit on Monday, reviewing the progress and future plans for the area.

New Brick Paving Brings Fresh Look to the Inner City

The reconstruction has introduced brick paving instead of the traditional tar, giving Lilian Ngoyi Street a modern, durable surface. While the road itself has been completed, work is still ongoing to install pavements and sidewalks. Construction containers also need to be cleared before the official reopening.

Mayor Morero confirmed that R82 million has been spent on “work package one,” covering the site of the explosion, while the next phase is already secured.

“A total of R82 million has been spent on work package one, which refers to the scene of the explosion. R110 million has been secured for work package two,” said Morero.

Precinct Modernisation Planned With Remaining Budget

The City plans to use the remaining R110 million to enhance the precinct beyond basic road repairs.

The funds will go towards improving the visual appeal of Lilian Ngoyi Street and modernising the surrounding inner-city area, with the aim of restoring the street to its former vibrancy and making it a safer, more attractive space for businesses and pedestrians.
