City Power Warns Joburg Residents Against Threatening Technicians During Cut-Offs

Johannesburg City Power has appealed to residents to stop threatening its technicians during electricity cut-off operations carried out across the city.

The warning follows the circulation of a video online that shows a City Power electrician being confronted — and seemingly threatened — by a group of angry community members.

City Power says this is not an isolated incident and has called on law enforcement agencies to investigate, noting that many of its employees have experienced similar intimidation during cut-off activities.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena stressed that the harassment of staff must come to an end.

“The behaviour displayed in the video is unacceptable and borders on intimidation. Publicly confronting, harassing, lying and humiliating technicians who are performing lawful duties does not help to root out corruption instead, it places innocent workers at significant risk and undermines service delivery.”

Rising Safety Concerns for Field Technicians

The utility company said it has become increasingly worried about the safety of its employees who are tasked with enforcing electricity disconnections.

These operations, which target illegal connections and non-paying customers, frequently put technicians in volatile situations.

According to the company, continued hostility towards staff hampers its ability to deliver essential services and maintain infrastructure effectively.

City Power Calls for Law Enforcement Action

City Power reiterated its call for police intervention to ensure the safety of workers on the ground.

According to the company, the technicians conducting cut-offs are performing lawful duties and should be able to work without fear of harm.

It also added that cooperation from communities is essential to protect both staff and service delivery.
