As the deadline approaches, it is crucial for all prepaid electricity users to be aware that their meters must be upgraded by November 24, 2024. City Power has emphasized that failure to comply with this requirement will result in meters no longer accepting new units.

Recent announcements by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) regarding an extension have caused confusion among consumers.

While there has been an extension for municipal software upgrades related to the generation of unique token codes, City Power has made it clear that this does not apply to individual customers. Customers who have not upgraded from KRN1 to KRN2 will face immediate consequences after the cutoff date, as highlighted by City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.

Consequences of Non-compliance

Energy provider Eskom reiterated the importance of this cut-off date, stating that failure to recode by the deadline will render customers unable to load electricity tokens. This means that meters will become inoperable, significantly impacting users.

SALGA’s spokesperson Sivuyile Mbambato confirmed that while there is a deadline extension for municipalities, customers must take action before the specified date.
