City Power Flags Lenasia As Major Non-Payment Hotspot Amid Rising Electricity Debt

City Power has identified Lenasia as a significant hotspot for non-payment, illegal electricity connections and damage to infrastructure.

Despite being one of the utility’s largest service regions, Lenasia records the lowest payment rate, with total outstanding debt estimated at R250 million.

On Friday, City Power conducted site visits to nine businesses in the area that collectively owe about R20 million for electricity services.

Lenasia electricity debt raises red flags for City Power

The power utility says the situation is worrying, particularly given the concentration of businesses operating in the area. According to City Power, many of these businesses continue to trade profitably while failing to settle their electricity accounts.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the non-payment trend places added strain on the power network and undermines the utility’s ability to maintain and protect infrastructure.

The power company has also raised concerns about widespread illegal connections and acts of vandalism in Lenasia, which further affect supply stability and increase operational costs.

The utility says addressing non-payment, electricity theft and infrastructure damage remains critical to ensuring sustainable service delivery across Johannesburg.
