City Of Johannesburg Launches Phase 2 Of Lilian Ngoyi Street Revamp In CBD

The City of Johannesburg has moved into the second phase of the Lilian Ngoyi Street reconstruction project in the CBD. This comes after the completion of extensive road repairs that followed the devastating underground gas explosion that tore through the area more than two years ago.

The corridor was reopened to traffic on Friday, marking a significant milestone for businesses and commuters in the busy precinct.

R192 Million Project Moves Into Beautification Phase

Phase one of the project focused on repairing the road at a cost of over R90 million. With that work now complete, attention shifts to phase two, which has a remaining budget of R110 million.

This phase will focus on transforming the area’s appearance by planting greenery, installing street furniture, and introducing new features designed to improve the overall look and feel of the precinct.

Business owners along Lilian Ngoyi Street expressed relief as traffic and customer activity return to normal. One shop owner shared his excitement, saying:

“I feel very good. It’s really amazing and there are just minor things left. They did a very good job and it took them more than two years.”

The total project cost amounts to R192 million, covering both the repair and beautification phases.
