City Of Cape Town Worker Arrested After Allegedly Pointing Gun At Motorist On Jakes Gerwel Drive

A City of Cape Town employee has been arrested after allegedly pointing a firearm at a motorist during a tense incident on Jakes Gerwel Drive.
Metro Police officers responded shortly after midday on Wednesday following reports of the confrontation near Bonteheuwel.
According to reports, the shaken motorist alerted officers on patrol and pointed out the suspect, who was driving a City-owned truck.
Metro Police Find Firearm and Ammunition in City Truck
Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Ruth Solomons said officers were approached by a motorist who claimed the truck driver had threatened them with a gun.
“Just after midday, officers on patrol along Jakes Gerwel Drive near Bonteheuwel were approached by a motorist who reported that a truck driver had pointed a firearm at them.
“The motorist pointed out the truck, and officers then proceeded to stop the driver.
“They requested permission to conduct a search, and found a firearm with one round in the chamber, and two magazines containing 15 rounds of ammunition.”
The suspect was arrested and taken to Bishop Lavis Police Station, while the vehicle was transported to the Metro Police depot in Bonteheuwel for safekeeping.
City of Cape Town employee to Appear in Court
Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that the suspect has been charged.
“The suspect was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court on Friday 6 March 2026.”
Ward councillor Angus McKenzie praised the resident who reported the incident and encouraged community members to continue speaking out against crime.
“Irrespective who you are or who you work for, if you break the law we will catch you, we will arrest you and it will be done with no fear and no favour. That is our approach on a daily basis in making Bonteheuwel and it’s surrounding areas safer.

Separate Firearm Arrest in Khayelitsha
In a separate incident in Nkanini, Neighbourhood Safety Officers acted on a tip-off about a man allegedly carrying a firearm.
Solomons said officers tracked down the suspect using the description provided.
“Armed with a description of the suspect, officers set about finding him.
“They recovered a firearm and a magazine in a plastic bag and detained the 28-year-old South African Police Service members at Makhaza Police Station for the illegal possession of a prohibited firearm.”
