City Makoti Says ‘I Pay The Bills’ And Mzansi Men Are Not OK

South African influencer and reality TV fave City Makoti has officially set social media on fire after dropping a truth bomb that many households live with quietly. The award-winning content creator sparked a full-blown national debate after revealing that she is the main provider in her marriage — and whew, Mzansi had a lot to say.
On Sunday, 8 February 2026, City Makoti took to TikTok and unapologetically opened up about being the primary breadwinner in her home. What followed? Applause from some, outrage from others, and a comment section that quickly turned into a gender war.

Fresh off her Influencer of the Year win at the 2025 Briefly News Entertainment Awards, the star questioned why a woman’s financial success in marriage still makes people so uneasy.
“Why does it make people uncomfortable when a woman says she’s the breadwinner? It’s immediately seen as an attack on a man’s ego,” she shared.

She didn’t stop there, adding that many women downplay or completely lie about who really brings in the money just to protect fragile egos — something she refuses to do.
City Makoti on Being a Female Breadwinner in Marriage
The content creator, whose real name is Anika Dambuza, made it clear that her success isn’t a solo mission. She gave flowers to her husband, Sihle Dambuza, praising him as her biggest cheerleader and the father of her child.
According to City Makoti, money doesn’t build a home — respect does. While she may bring in the bigger cheque right now, she insists that Sihle remains the head of their household, leading with love, emotional intelligence and guidance while also growing his own career.
She also touched on the extra pressure that comes with being in an interracial marriage, where traditional expectations from different backgrounds collide with modern realities — all under the public microscope.
One thing she’s firm on? Women should never be forced to downgrade their lifestyles to make others comfortable.

Mzansi Reacts: Praise, Panic and Pure Chaos
As expected, the internet did what it does best — lose its mind.
Some critics accused City Makoti of embarrassing her husband publicly.
Tebogo_M21: “She just disrespected her husband on social media.”
msmonakhisi: “Men are breadwinners all the time and don’t announce it. Why did she?”
Modiokwan3: “The husband will cheat. That’s how men heal after humiliation.”

Others dragged in past conversations about “giving men grace,” questioning whether honesty now equals humiliation.
But the support was LOUD.
TheeLadi: “Black women do this every day and pretend it’s their men.”
Akhona_PQ: “Other races are honest about being providers. Black women were taught to protect men’s pride.”
Niphotisym: “This honesty will free men from outdated pressure.”
neo_mshibe: “At least she’s telling the truth instead of suffering in silence.”
And here’s the kicker — Stats SA reports that nearly 42% of South African households were female-led in 2025. Meaning City Makoti’s reality isn’t rare… it’s just rarely spoken about.
