Church Robbery Suspect Killed In Shoot-Out With Police

One suspect was shot dead and five others arrested following a dramatic shoot-out with police in Westdene, Johannesburg, on Monday. The group is believed to be behind a string of armed robberies at churches and places of worship across Gauteng.
Police Intercept Suspects Planning Another Church Robber
According to Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo, crime intelligence received a tip-off about a group planning to rob a church in Florida. Various law enforcement agencies were activated to intercept them.

While on the lookout, officers spotted a Toyota Quantum linked to the suspects in Sophiatown. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspects sped off, leading to a high-speed chase. The suspects then opened fire on officers, prompting a shoot-out before their vehicle crashed into a fence.

Weapons and Stolen Goods Recovered
Police recovered three unlicensed firearms and ammunition, along with a sound system worth over R2 million that had been stolen from a Florida church. The Toyota Quantum used by the suspects was also seized.
Two of the five arrested men are receiving treatment under police guard after sustaining injuries in the shoot-out. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities conducting ballistic tests on the recovered weapons to determine if they were used in other crimes.
