Chuck Norris Dies At 86 As Hollywood Mourns Martial Arts Icon

Legendary martial artist and actor Chuck Norris has died at the age of 86, his family confirmed.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Instagram, his family announced his passing “with heavy hearts”, remembering him as both a global icon and a devoted family man.

“He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved,” they said. “Through his work, discipline and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives.

“To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength.

“To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family.”

From Air Force Roots to Martial Arts Greatness

Born Carlos Ray Norris in Oklahoma in 1940, Norris began his journey far from the bright lights of Hollywood. As a teenager, he joined the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in South Korea.

It was there that he discovered martial arts, a discipline that would shape the rest of his life. Over the years, he earned black belts in multiple forms, including karate, taekwondo, tang soo do, Brazilian jiu jitsu and judo. He also went on to create his own martial arts system, chun kuk do.

By the 1960s, Norris had established himself as a champion in competitive karate, paving the way for his entry into films.

Chuck Norris Breakthrough Role Alongside Bruce Lee

Norris’s rise to global fame came after he met martial arts superstar Bruce Lee. The two famously faced off in the 1972 film The Way of the Dragon, where Norris played the villain Colt.

Recalling their on-set exchange in a past interview, Norris said: “At that time I held the world title and kiddingly I said to Bruce, ‘Well, who wins Bruce?’

“And he says, ‘I win, I’m the star of this movie’. I say, ‘Oh, I see, you want to beat the world champion?’ And he said, ‘No I don’t, I want to kill the world champion’.”

The role marked a turning point in his career, opening doors in Hollywood.

Encouraged by friend and actor Steve McQueen, Norris pursued acting more seriously, landing roles in films such as Breaker! Breaker! and Good Guys Wear Black.

Throughout the 1980s, Norris cemented his reputation as an action star with films like Missing in Action, The Delta Force and Code of Silence.

He later became a household name through the hit TV series Walker, Texas Ranger, where he played the principled lawman Cordell Walker.

From Meme Icon to Final Roles

Norris also showed his lighter side with a cameo in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, starring Ben Stiller.

His later career included appearances in The Expendables 2, and he was set to feature in the upcoming Australian action-comedy Zombie Plane.

Off-screen, Norris remained committed to promoting fitness and running martial arts schools.

In recent years, he found a new generation of fans through viral internet jokes known as “Chuck Norris facts”, which humorously exaggerated his legendary toughness.
