Chris Brown Petition To Be Handed Over At Start Of 16 Days Of Activism

Women For Change is all set to hand over a petition against Grammy-winning artist Chris Brown right at the start of the 16 Days of Activism, which kicks off next Monday.

The American artist is scheduled to headline his two-day, sold-out concert next month at FNB Stadium, but not everyone is happy about it.

Why the Backlash?

The announcement of his performance has sparked major backlash from advocacy groups because of Brown’s history with domestic violence. Women For Change quickly launched a “Mute Chris Brown” petition after the concerts were announced, and it’s already gathered over 50,000 signatures! Talk about a massive response.

“We are simply saying that an abuser cannot be allowed in our country – a rape capital of the world. Gender-based violence and femicide is already a pandemic in our society, especially our femicide rate is higher than the global average,” said Women For Change spokesperson Bulelwa Adonis.

Despite some backlash from Chris Brown’s fans, Adonis mentioned that the organisation appreciates the overwhelming public support for their petition. “It’s not about the individual per se; we are speaking about a person with a record of abuse, and we refuse to be selective about our activism.”

Handing Over the Petition

Adonis told Jacaranda FM News that they’re finalising the handover document, which will be submitted to Big Concerts and the Department of Home Affairs.

“We are going to make this petition handover document accessible to the public. Once we hand that over, which will be at the beginning of 16 Days of Activism, the public will be able to get the full understanding in detail as to exactly why we started this petition.”

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence runs from 25 November to 10 December. This campaign is a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against gender-based violence and the importance of standing up for what’s right.
