Safeguarding Children: Investigating Alleged Rape Case in Siyabuswa

The (SAPS) in Mpumalanga has responded to recent allegations surrounding the reported rape of a 3-year-old girl in Siyabuswa. The incident, which allegedly occurred in December 2024, was officially reported to the SAPS by the child’s mother on February 2, 2025.

Upon receiving the report, the case was assigned to the Kwamhlanga (FCS) Unit, a specialised team responsible for investigating such sensitive cases.

Medical Examination for the Child

Members of the FCS Unit acted quickly after being alerted, ensuring that the child received a medical examination from an experienced doctor at the closest hospital.

During the hospital visit, authorities learned that community members had captured and beaten a guy suspected of committing the rape. The individual was then transported to the Siyabuswa police station.

Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following an investigation by FCS detectives, the alleged rape case docket was submitted to the Senior Prosecutor for a decision. However, the case was not enrolled, therefore the man was released.

The SAPS stressed that the apprehended man did not pay bail, contrary to several public claims. In addition, the child underwent observation procedures related to the alleged the incident.

SAPS Commitment to Child Safety

The SAPS in Mpumalanga reiterated its commitment to properly investigate all reports of sexual assault and rape, particularly those involving children. Regardless of any complaints levelled at the team, the SAPS stated that FCS detectives conducted a thorough investigation into the alleged incident, prioritising the child’s safety.

The police encourage the public to report sexual offences quickly, reassuring them that they would not be turned away.

Addressing Allegations Against Police Personnel

Some police personnel have also faced allegations over their actions in this case. The SAPS encourages anybody with information or concerns against any member of the Police Service to come forward and formally report them for investigation. As of yet, no formal complaints have been filed about the suspected misbehaviour of police.

The SAPS reported that information about the case was gathered from the child’s mother and father, and the matter was presented to the Senior Prosecutor.

Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, stressed the sensitivity of rape cases, particularly those involving children.

The SAPS is dedicated to treating all victims of crime with dignity, respect, and a victim-centred approach, handling such situations with discretion, kindness, delicacy, and sensitivity while protecting the well-being of those affected.

“Rape is a deeply traumatic experience, particularly for children, and the public is urged to consider the unintended and negative consequences that such allegations may have on the future of the child involved. Our goal remains to serve and protect our communities with integrity and professionalism”, said the General.
