Charges Withdrawn Against Businessman In R14.9 Million Precious Stones Theft Case

The State has withdrawn all charges against businessman Etienne van der Walt in the alleged attempted theft of precious stones worth R14.9 million. The decision was confirmed in court on Thursday, bringing an end to the case against him. His release follows successful legal representations made to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Van der Walt had been one of three people accused in connection with an authorised raid conducted in Killarney in 2023. The matter, however, will continue against his two co-accused.

The court confirmed that Etienne van der Walt was no longer facing any charges in the matter. His legal representative told the court that representations submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions had been successful. As a result, prosecutors decided to withdraw the case against him.

Co-Accused Continue Bail Application

While Van der Walt has been cleared in the matter, the legal proceedings against the remaining accused are continuing. Adrian Mackenzie and Kersha-Leigh Stols remain before the court in connection with the alleged offence. Both are expected to continue with their Schedule 6 bail application.
