Charges Dropped Against One Of Accused In Joshlin Smith Case

The disappearance of six-year-old Joshlin Smith in February has led to a high-profile investigation, capturing the attention of the community and beyond.

Following her disappearance, several individuals were arrested on serious charges including human trafficking and kidnapping. Notably, one of the accused, Lourentia Lombaard, has recently seen the charges against her dropped.

Details of the Court Ruling

On Monday morning, October 21, Lombaard appeared at the Vredenburg Magistrate’s Court. During the session, it was revealed that the state has decided to drop all charges against her.

Lombaard had been charged alongside Smith’s mother, Racquel ‘Kelly’ Smith, her boyfriend Jacquen Appollis, and their friend Steveno van Rhyn. Despite previously confessing to her involvement in the case, Lombaard is now set to serve as a state witness, shifting the focus back onto the remaining accused.

Future Developments In Joshlin Case

While Lombaard’s charges have been withdrawn, the investigation continues as the case has been postponed to January 31, 2025, which will be heard at the Western Cape High Court for pretrial proceedings.

According to Eric Ntabazalila, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, more arrests are expected, and further charges may be added. This case remains active, and the community continues to seek justice for Joshlin Smith.
