Cele’s Nephew Kills Girlfriend And 3-Year-Old Son Whom He Suspected Was Not His

A shocking tragedy has rocked the community of Danganya, uMgababa, south of Durban, where a 24-year-old man, Mlondi Cele, allegedly killed his girlfriend, Bongeka Makhathini (21), and their three-year-old son, Okuhle. Both victims were found with their throats slit inside an RDP house, with Cele later discovered hanging in the lounge.

The motive appears linked to a voice note Cele reportedly sent to a relative, accusing Makhathini of having a child with another man. Family members and the community remain reeling from the devastating incident.

A Grim Scene

Former Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, who is Mlondi’s uncle, recounted receiving the heart-wrenching news early Friday morning. According to him, Mlondi’s voice note provided directions to the crime scene and hinted at his intentions.

Upon entering the house, authorities found Makhathini’s body in the bedroom, with Okuhle’s lifeless body nearby. Mlondi was found hanging, and evidence suggested the crime had been premeditated. Makhathini’s cellphone was found damaged, and their identification documents were placed atop the bed.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Bheki Cele revealed that Mlondi had been unemployed and battling anger issues. The house, which was the site of the murders, belonged to Mlondi’s late father, who himself was murdered three years ago.

“We are devastated and wish he had chosen to only take his life instead of harming innocent people,” Cele said, adding that the Makhathini family is equally broken.

The grief-stricken Makhathini family has expressed their pain but refrained from assigning blame. Hlengiwe Makhathini, Bongeka’s aunt, described the family’s anguish: “We are broken and hurt. Bongeka’s mother is grieving deeply. She never spoke of any problems in her relationship.”

Unanswered Questions

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the incident likely occurred Thursday night or early Friday morning. While suspicions of infidelity have been raised, the exact motive remains unclear.

As the families grapple with this tragedy, financial challenges add another layer of difficulty. Bheki Cele disclosed that burial funds for Mlondi are uncertain.

“This is a heavy burden for us. We are unsure how we will manage to give him a proper funeral,” he said.

This tragic incident leaves two families struggling with unimaginable loss and unanswered questions, highlighting the dire need for mental health and domestic violence awareness in communities.
