Celebrities Urge Justice for Rape Survivors In April 5 Protest

A coalition of celebrities, including Kwela Tebza, DJ Bongz, and Lady Du, is joining forces with the Mzansi Act Now Foundation to protest against rape and child abuse in Matatiele, Eastern Cape.

The protest, set to take place today, 5th of April is following the shocking rape of Cwecwe, the seven-year-old student of a private school Bergview College, in Matatiele last year. Cwecwe was reportedly assaulted on school premises while awaiting transport home.

According to a report seen by SurgeZirc SA, the principal of the school had previously refused to show support for the victim, and facilitate DNA testing. He instead, offered the family a transfer letter, prioritising the school’s reputation over the child’s well-being.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice with various bodies deeming the reaction as unacceptable and a severe disregard for the victim’s rights and safety.

DJ Bongz to Perpetrators: “You Must Be Held Accountable”

However, it has since been revealed that the principal had given his DNA samples, which came back negative.

DJ Bongz took to his Instagram page to emphasise the importance of sending a strong message to perpetrators.

“You have caused irreparable harm to innocent people, and you must be held accountable. Seek help to address your issues and work towards becoming a positive force in society,” he said.

Tebogo Lerole, chairperson of Mzansi Act Now, highlighted the need for collective action to prevent such atrocities.

He was quoted saying, “We need to work together to create a society that values and respects women and children. This requires educating people about consent, boundaries, and healthy relationships, as well as promoting gender equality and challenging patriarchal norms.”

Celebrities Can Influence Change – Lerole

Lerole also emphasised the critical role that celebrities and influencers can play in raising awareness about this issue.

“By sharing their own experiences and stories, amplifying the voices and stories of victims and survivors, and using their platforms to educate and raise awareness, celebrities can help bring about meaningful change.”

The protest aims to raise awareness, demand justice for survivors, and promote a culture of respect and equality in Matatiele and beyond.
