Shoppers at Northgate Mall in Randburg, Gauteng were left startled after a section of the ceiling collapsed following heavy rainfall caused by a severe thunderstorm on Saturday, 27 December.

Videos of the incident quickly circulated on social media, sparking concern and speculation about the safety of the shopping centre.

Northgate Mall Ceiling Gives Way Near Pick n Pay Walkway

The collapse occurred along the internal walkway between Entrance 2 and Pick n Pay, close to Value Co.

Mall management confirmed that only a limited section of the ceiling was affected.

“No injuries were recorded,” a mall representative said. “We closed off the part of the walkway where the ceiling collapsed and cleaned the area. Value Co was not affected, and the rest of the mall remains open.”

Despite online claims suggesting the entire mall had collapsed, management stressed that the damage was confined to a small area and shoppers were able to continue using other parts of the mall as normal.

Footage of the collapsed ceiling spread rapidly across social media platforms, with reactions ranging from concern about building maintenance to jokes about the sudden chaos caused by the storm.

Mall officials moved quickly to secure the affected area, preventing access while clean-up operations were carried out.

Severe Weather Warning Issued Across Gauteng

The incident occurred as Gauteng remained under a Level 4 severe thunderstorm warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

The warning highlighted the risk of flooding, structural damage and service disruptions across the province.

In a public message, the Gauteng Provincial Joint Operations Centre (JOC) cautioned residents:
“Such conditions could result in flooding, damage to structures and disruptions of services. Please be alert and take necessary precautions.”

Shoppers and residents have been urged to remain cautious during periods of severe weather and to heed official warnings.
