Cedric Nkabinde To Testify As Parliament’s Police Corruption Probe Resumes

Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde, is set to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS) when proceedings resume on Thursday.

His testimony comes just weeks after Minister Mchunu appeared before the same committee, where he denied all allegations of corruption and interference in police operations.

Nkabinde is expected to face similar questions, particularly regarding his involvement in Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in December last year.

Nkabinde’s name has surfaced repeatedly during the inquiry, with members raising questions about his rapid career progression, from handling case dockets to serving as Mchunu’s right-hand man in the ministry.

Cedric Nkabinde’s Role Under Scrutiny in Police Corruption Inquiry

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi told the committee during his own testimony that he first met Minister Mchunu through Nkabinde, prior to Mchunu’s appointment as Police Minister in 2024.

In October, Nkabinde spoke publicly about his upcoming appearance before the committee following a police raid at his residence, which he described as harassment.

“I contacted my lawyers about this incident and then my lawyers contacted or engaged the ad hoc committee in Parliament, which is sitting as we speak, to report this harassment and intimidation because I’m one of the witnesses in that process,” he said at the time.

Batohi’s Testimony Highlights Deep Concerns in Justice System

Nkabinde’s appearance follows that of National Director of Public Prosecutions Shamila Batohi, who previously testified about organised crime networks infiltrating South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The committee is expected to intensify its scrutiny as it seeks to uncover the full extent of alleged corruption within the SAPS and related government structures.
