Cedric Nkabinde Returns To Parliament Ad Hoc Committee After MPs Reject Previous Testimony

Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s Chief of Staff, Cedric Nkabinde, is back before the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption, following last week’s abrupt end to his testimony.

MPs had sent him away after identifying inconsistencies in his sworn statement and oral evidence.

Nkabinde initially appeared on Thursday last week, but the hearing was halted when discrepancies emerged regarding key dates and events.

His testimony included details about his first interactions with controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi and Mchunu’s travel schedule after assuming office as police minister.

The committee also heard Nkabinde discuss his close ties with KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, which came under scrutiny during his initial appearance.

Parliament Probes Police Corruption Amid Cedric Nkabinde Testimony Inconsistencies

Yesterday, KwaZulu-Natal-based crime activist Mary De Haas appeared before the committee, defending letters she sent to Mchunu urging him to disband the political killings task team (PKTT).

Her submission set the stage for Nkabinde’s return, highlighting ongoing concerns about transparency and accountability within the police ministry.

Evidence leader Norman Arendse confirmed that Nkabinde submitted a new statement ahead of today’s hearing.

“I would request to you that members bring the original Nkabinde statement. While we were sitting here, we received what they now call a supplementary statement, which is not the same,” Arendse said.

Following Nkabinde’s appearance, the committee is expected to hear from police head of procurement, General Molefe Fani, later on Thursday. The session aims to clarify outstanding questions about procurement processes and internal relationships within the police service.

The committee continues to closely examine allegations of corruption, sending a clear message that inconsistencies in evidence will not be overlooked.
