Cat Matlala Wins Court Bid To Stay At Kgosi Mampuru Prison Until May 13

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has granted an application by corruption-accused businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, widely known as “Cat”, to remain at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre.

Matlala appeared in court on Monday, where the ruling confirmed he will stay at the facility until 13 May to allow for ongoing consultations with his legal team.

Legal Team Argues for Easier Trial Preparation

Matlala’s lawyers argued that keeping him in Pretoria would make it easier to prepare for trial, a submission the court accepted.

Earlier this year, he had been transferred to the Ebongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre in Kokstad, a move that complicated access to his legal representatives.

The relocation, which took place in December 2025, had prompted Matlala to approach the Johannesburg High Court, citing difficulties in properly consulting with his defence team.

Cat Matlala’s R360 Million SAPS Tender Case Under Scrutiny

Matlala faces multiple charges linked to an allegedly irregular R360 million tender awarded by the South African Police Service in 2024.

The State alleges that he and his co-accused used front companies and falsified documents to secure the lucrative contract.

While prosecutors are pushing for a trial date and warning against further delays, the defence has indicated it will challenge aspects of the State’s evidence and seek additional time to prepare.

The case is expected to involve extensive financial records and numerous witnesses, which could affect the timeline.

His legal team is also preparing to bring another application regarding his detention conditions as proceedings move closer to trial.
