Cassel Mathale Backs Disbanding Of Political Killings Task Team Despite Its Success

Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale has thrown his support behind Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT), despite the unit’s impressive track record in tackling politically motivated crimes.

Mathale appeared before the ad hoc committee investigating police corruption on Tuesday, where he explained that while the team had performed exceptionally well, he agreed with the move to redirect police resources more evenly across other serious crimes such as murder and robbery.

“I supported the disbanding of the task team for the right reasons,” Mathale said, emphasising that the focus should now shift towards bolstering investigations into violent crimes that continue to plague communities.

Mathale Learned of the Decision on Social Media

During his appearance before Parliament, Mathale revealed that he first heard about the decision to disband the PKTT through social media before receiving a call from Minister Mchunu himself.

“On social media, that’s where I picked it up, and he then called me,” the deputy minister said.

Despite the unexpected way he learned of the decision, Mathale maintained that he ultimately supported the rationale behind it. However, he admitted he was “not entirely convinced” about how the directive was implemented and communicated.

Responding to questions from Patriotic Alliance MP Ashley Sauls, Mathale reiterated that while the PKTT’s disbandment was justified, efforts must now be made to strengthen police capacity in investigating violent offences.

“My reason is you strengthen the capacity to do investigation work around murder and robbery-related cases,” he said.

Mathale wrapped up his testimony in one day. The National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate head, Advocate Anthea Johnson, is expected to appear before the committee next week to provide further evidence.
