WATCH | Cash-In-Transit Robbery On Old Inanda Road Sparks Shootout And Aerial Manhunt In KZN

A dramatic cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery brought traffic and residents to a standstill on Old Inanda Road in Brindhaven, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday afternoon.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) confirmed that its operations centre was inundated with emergency calls at around 1:25pm, with members of the public reporting loud explosions and an active robbery in progress.

Reaction Officers were dispatched without delay, racing to the scene as reports of gunfire filtered through from the area.

On arrival, officers encountered individuals believed to have been acting as spotters for the robbery. The suspects were described as heavily armed, and a gun battle broke out shortly thereafter.

During the exchange of fire, a RUSA response vehicle was struck twice by bullets. No officers were injured. The suspects fled in two vehicles towards Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal, with reports indicating that shots were fired into the air as they sped away.

Shootout Erupts During KwaZulu-Natal Cash-In-Transit Robbery

The confrontation marked a tense escalation in what had already been a volatile situation. Residents in the vicinity reported hearing multiple gunshots and explosions as the suspects attempted to evade capture.

RUSA confirmed that its members came under fire while responding to the robbery. Despite the damage to one of its vehicles, officers continued with efforts to track down those involved.

The suspects’ escape route led towards Inanda, prompting further alerts to authorities operating in surrounding areas.

RUSA Deploys Robinson R44 Helicopter In Aerial Search For Armed Suspects

In a bid to locate the fleeing gunmen, RUSA deployed its Robinson R44 helicopter to support ground teams combing the area.

Reaction Officers coordinated their movements on the ground while the aircraft conducted an aerial sweep over nearby neighbourhoods and possible escape routes.

“Due to the suspects being heavily armed, the Pilot-in-Command of the Robinson R44 was instructed to maintain a safe operational distance during the search,” said RUSA.

Despite the extensive search operation, no arrests had been made at the time of publication. Investigations into the robbery remain ongoing.
