Case Of Alleged SA Recruit For Russia-Ukraine War Postponed To 2026

The court case involving five people accused of enticing South Africans to join the Russia-Ukraine war has been postponed to February 2026. The suspects, who were arrested earlier this year, briefly appeared at the Kempton Park Magistrates Court before being granted bail.

The group faces allegations under the Foreign Military Assistance Act, which prohibits citizens from participating in foreign armed forces without approval. Bail amounts varied among the accused, who will remain out pending their next court appearance.

Two of the alleged recruiters, Nonkululeko Mantula and Xolani Ntuli, were released on R30,000 and R15,000 bail respectively. Three alleged recruits, aged between 21 and 24, were each granted R5,000 bail.

Accused May Not Be Linked to Other Russia Recruitment Case

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mahanjane said there is currently no indication that this matter is connected to the separate case involving 17 South African men who were allegedly deceived into fighting on the frontlines of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“At this moment, we don’t have information that they might flee or evade their trial; hence, we did not oppose their bail application.

“However, we requested that the court applies conditions such as that the passport for accused number one, who we are alleging is the main recruiter, must remain in the State,” Mahanjane said.

Strict Bail Conditions Until 2026 Court Return

As part of the bail conditions, the alleged main recruiter is barred from possessing a passport, while other stipulations aim to ensure all five suspects return to court when proceedings resume in 2026.

The postponement allows for further investigation and preparation ahead of the trial.
