Case Against Two Hawks Officers Accused Of Corruption Postponed To November

The case involving two senior Hawks officers charged with corruption has been postponed to 12 November in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Limpopo.

The officers are accused of attempting to interfere in an investigation by approaching the investigating officer in a bid to destroy evidence linking former African National Congress (ANC) MPL Tally Mashamaite to the murder of Mogalakwena councillor Vaaltyn Kekana.

Kekana and another ANC member, Ralph Kanyane, were shot and killed in what police believe was a politically motivated attack in 2019.

Allegations of Tampering with Key Evidence Against Officers

During court proceedings, Magistrate Daniel Mabitsela outlined the charges against the accused, Captain Virginia Kupa and Brigadier Mapome Mohajane. The two officers allegedly offered gratification to influence the investigation into Mashamaite.

Mabitsela said, “You being public officers directly or indirectly and unlawfully intentionally gave or agreed or offered to give gratification to give tenders, a promotion at work to any other person,

“…to Malesela Simon Mogale in order to act personally or by influencing any other person to act in a manner that amounts to the illegal, dishonest and unauthorised or biased exercise, helping Tally Mashamate in a case investigated by the complainant by dismissing evidence that linked Tally.”

The court will resume the matter on 12 November, when the accused are expected to appear again.
