Car And Truck Collision Claims Lives Of Eight Schoolchildren On KZN North Coast

A devastating accident occurred on the N2 highway near Mandeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, resulting in the deaths of eight individuals, including schoolchildren. The head-on collision involved a vehicle transporting students and a large truck.

Emergency Response

According to IPSS medical rescue spokesperson Samantha Meyrick, search and rescue teams are actively working at the scene, searching for additional schoolchildren who are reportedly missing.

“We have confirmed eight deceased and one critically injured. This is an active scene, with the N2 closed in both directions between bridges 18 and 19 on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast,” Meyrick stated.

Circumstances of the Crash

The provincial transport department provided further details regarding the incident, indicating that the driver of a 7-seater light motor vehicle lost control, leading to the catastrophic collision with the truck.

This resulted in the truck veering off the road and overturning. Emergency rescue teams, along with the road traffic inspectorate, are on-site conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“Our hearts are with the families and relatives of the eight victims of the road accident,” the department expressed in a statement. The tragic loss of life, especially amongst schoolchildren, highlights the urgent need for heightened road safety measures in the region.
