Cape Town Uber Driver Arrested Following Alleged Kidnapping Attempt

A Cape Town Uber driver has been arrested after a 28-year-old woman, identified as Colleen Smith* (not her real name), sustained injuries when she allegedly jumped out of a moving car amid an attempt to kidnap her.

The incident took place on the evening of May 26, following Smith’s late shift as a waitress at a restaurant in Blouberg.

According to Smith, she requested an Uber around 9:30 pm to go home. After verifying the driver’s details and providing the four-digit pin to start the trip, she noticed the driver passing her house.

When she attempted to inform him, he called out her name, pulled out a gun, and threatened to shoot her if she moved. The driver demanded money, and upon learning she had none, he allegedly seized her phone and drove to a secluded area along the beach.

Smith, who was armed with her house keys and a knuckle duster shaped like a cat, refused to give her house keys to the driver. She explained that her primary concern was the safety of her three-year-old daughter and 60-year-old mother-in-law at home. In a desperate attempt to escape, she jumped out of the moving car, despite the driver’s threats.

Smith sustained multiple injuries and spent nearly an hour finding transportation to the hospital. She reported the incident to the authorities, and the driver was apprehended within two days.

However, Smith faces significant financial burdens due to lost work hours and medical expenses. She has been in communication with American International Group (AIG), Uber’s insurance provider, which has agreed to cover only her medical bills.

Smith continues to seek compensation from Uber to cover the full extent of her financial losses, including lost wages and other damages caused by the traumatic event. The case highlights the importance of safety measures and accountability in the e-hailing industry.
