Cape Town Taxi Violence: CATA Drivers Fear For Safety Amid Deadly Route Feud

Taxi drivers from the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) say they are living in fear as deadly shootings continue to rock Cape Town. At least five people have been killed this week, while three others—including passengers—were wounded in a string of taxi-related attacks.

The ongoing bloodshed has been linked to a bitter feud between CATA and its rival association, CODETA, over lucrative routes between Somerset West, Mfuleni, and Khayelitsha.

The latest wave of violence has claimed the lives of four taxi drivers in Philippi East, Khayelitsha, and Macassar. Operations at the Somerset West taxi rank were temporarily halted after police closed the station for 24 hours earlier this week.

Talks aimed at ending the bloodshed are expected to resume soon, but many drivers remain sceptical about whether peace can last.

Drivers Speak Out: “We Don’t Feel Safe”

CATA taxi driver Ntsikelelo Moshani told Eyewitness News that the escalating violence has left drivers living in constant fear.

“We don’t feel safe as drivers with everything that’s been going on because we’re the ones driving these taxis,” said Moshani.

He added that tensions would ease if CODETA withdrew from the Somerset West rank.
