Cape Town Metro Police Attacked In Athlone During Arrest Of Armed Suspect

Metro Police officers came under attack from residents in Athlone while carrying out an arrest of a suspected gunman in The Vlei informal settlement.

The City of Cape Town has strongly condemned the incident, which took place on Sunday, 21 April.

Officers had been deployed shortly before 11am after reports of gunfire in the area.

Armed Suspect Arrested Amid Athlone Chaos

Upon arrival at the scene, officers apprehended a suspect who was found in possession of a 9mm Ruger pistol along with 18 rounds of ammunition.

However, as the arrest unfolded, a group of community members began pelting police vehicles with stones, damaging two patrol cars.

Despite the volatile situation, officers managed to secure the suspect and transport him to a police station.

Cape Town Raises Concern Over Rising Attacks on Officers

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, raised concern over the growing number of attacks on law enforcement.

According to City data, Metro Police recorded 52 attacks on officers between July 2025 and January 2026, compared to 43 incidents during the same period the previous year.

Smith said: “It can’t be that we cry out for safer communities and then behave in this manner towards the very people who are trying to help.

“Attacks on our staff have become so commonplace, and just a cursory look at Metro Police incidents already points to an increase in this financial year.”

No injuries were reported among officers, but the damaged vehicles will be taken out of service for repairs.
