Cape Town Littering Incident Goes Viral As Motorist Fined R500 After CBD Confrontation

A Cape Town motorist has been slapped with a R500 fine after a video showing him discarding litter from his car went viral on social media, igniting widespread debate about public behaviour and accountability.

The footage, widely shared on Facebook, captured the driver tossing rubbish out of his vehicle at a busy intersection in the Cape Town CBD. The act was witnessed by a tour guide travelling behind the motorist in a tour bus.

Rather than ignoring the incident, the tour guide stopped, collected the litter and threw it back into the car, sending a clear message that littering would not be tolerated.

Viral Cape Town Littering Video Sparks Public Outrage

The confrontation did not end there. According to the footage, the motorist responded by throwing the litter out once again and making derogatory gestures towards the people on the tour bus.

The exchange quickly drew online attention, with many social media users calling for consequences.

As the clip gained traction, the City of Cape Town stepped in, launching an investigation and appealing to the public to assist in identifying the individual involved.

City of Cape Town Confirms R500 Fine Under Waste By-law

Law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason later confirmed that the motorist had identified himself and taken responsibility for the incident.

“The motorist came forward voluntarily and has paid the admission of guilt fine of R500 under the city’s integrated waste management by-law,” Dyason said.

The City of Cape Town welcomed the outcome and used the incident as a reminder to residents that by-laws apply equally to everyone.

“These might seem like minor violations, but the law applies to everyone, without fear or favour,” Dyason added.
