Cape Town Grandmother Shocked As Ambulance Dumps Grandson, 14, At Home Still Wearing Drip

A Cape Town grandmother got the shock of her life when her 14-year-old grandson was mistakenly dropped off at home still wearing his hospital gown, with his drip and bandages intact, instead of being transferred to another hospital.

Teen Rue-Wahl Bunding, who had recently undergone an appendectomy and was receiving treatment for an infection, was left outside his grandmother’s home by an ambulance without any transfer documents.

Cape Town Grandmother Recounts Ordeal

His grandmother, Anneline Hartzenberg, recalled the terrifying moment she opened her door on Monday, March 3.

“I just heard a vehicle speeding off, and when I opened the door, there stood my grandson—still in his hospital gown, with a drip and bandages, and very weak.”

Hartzenberg was horrified at the mistake, questioning what would have happened if she wasn’t home to receive him.

“He is a minor—what would have happened to him?” she asked.

Hospital Delays in Fetching Him Back

In a desperate attempt to get help, Hartzenberg contacted Tygerberg Hospital, but claimed they were reluctant to send an ambulance.

“They told me to bring him in myself, but I refused—what if something happened to him in a private vehicle?” she said.

After a frustrating wait, an ambulance only arrived five hours later.

Western Cape Health Admits to “Serious Mistake”

The Western Cape Health and Wellness Department (WCHW) has since admitted the shocking blunder, confirming that Rue-Wahl was mistakenly discharged and dropped at home instead of being transferred from Tygerberg Hospital to Helderberg Hospital.

A WCHW statement expressed regret over the distress caused. “We acknowledge the incident involving Rue-Wahl and deeply regret the distress this has caused him and his family.

“An internal investigation is currently underway to understand what led to this incident and to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.”

They also issued a formal apology, stating their commitment to providing quality care to patients.

This disturbing mix-up has left many questioning how such a critical error occurred and whether proper hospital protocols were followed.
