Candlelight Vigil Held As Five Miners Remain Trapped Underground At Ekapa Mine

Kimberley residents came together on Thursday evening to stand in unity with the families of five miners who remain trapped underground at Ekapa Minerals.

Dozens gathered outside the mine’s premises, lighting candles and offering prayers following Tuesday’s mud rush incident that left the workers stranded and unreachable.

The emotional gathering was organised by members of the Cassandra community, located next to the mine. Community leaders said the vigil was intended to offer comfort and strength to the affected families during an incredibly difficult time.

“It’s times like these that bring unity and reminds us of God’s love. We are very grateful and honored to be here to give support to the distraught families.”

The sombre atmosphere reflected the deep concern gripping the town as rescue operations continue.

Wife of One Of Trapped Miners Speaks Out: ‘The Waiting Is Driving Me Crazy’

For one family in particular, the uncertainty has become overwhelming. The wife of a 42-year-old miner who remains trapped described the emotional toll of the past three days.

“I am devastated and heartbroken, the waiting is driving me crazy and I am panicking because the only update we are getting is that they are still pumping water underground.

“I always hope to hear that they will start searching for them but I know that we also have to consider the safety of the rescue team as well. It has been three days already and at this point I just want my husband to be found dead or alive.”

Rescue teams have been working around the clock since the incident, focusing on pumping water from underground shafts before they can safely reach the trapped workers.

For families, however, each passing hour intensifies the anxiety.

Ekapa Minerals Rescue Efforts Continue as Minister Gwede Mantashe Set to Visit

Ekapa Minerals is expected to provide an official update on the progress of its rescue mission. The company has not yet confirmed when search teams will be able to physically access the affected area.

Meanwhile, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe is scheduled to visit the mine on Friday. His presence is expected to bring national attention to the situation as authorities monitor developments closely.

As the rescue operation enters its third day, the people of Kimberley remain united in hope — holding onto faith while waiting for answers.
