Cachalia Warns Corruption Is Eating Away At South Africa’s National Security

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has raised alarm over the deep and pervasive corruption undermining South Africa’s institutions, warning that it poses a direct threat to national security.

Speaking at the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation’s Annual Inclusive Growth Forum in the Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal, Cachalia said corruption had become “deeply enshrined in institutions and political structures” across the country.

His remarks come amid ongoing investigations by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and a Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee probing allegations of corruption involving senior police officials and the possible infiltration of the justice system.

Investigations Shine Spotlight on Police and Justice System

The Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee are currently delving into claims that corruption among high-ranking police figures has compromised the integrity of South Africa’s justice institutions.

These inquiries aim to uncover the extent of state capture and ensure accountability within law enforcement. Cachalia emphasised that addressing corruption at the highest levels of authority is essential to safeguarding democracy and restoring public confidence.

Call for a Stronger Anti-Corruption Framework

Cachalia outlined plans to establish a new, constitutionally compliant, multifunctional anti-corruption agency, which would expand on the existing Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

“We have proposed the establishment of a new constitutionally compliant, multifunctional anti-corruption agency, building on the SIU into what we call the Office of Public Integrity,” he said.

“It will have powers to investigate systematic corruption, to make binding recommendations, and where it uncovers evidence of criminal conduct, to complete the docket.”

The proposed Office of Public Integrity would serve as a powerful mechanism to tackle systemic corruption, ensure accountability, and uphold the rule of law.
