Cachalia Says Madlanga Commission Offers Chance To Rebuild SAPS After Mkhwanazi’s Revelations

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has described KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry as an opportunity for change within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Cachalia said Mkhwanazi’s revelations about corruption within the Crime Intelligence division were not fiction, adding that the unit’s integrity had “eroded over time.”

While Mkhwanazi was testifying before an Ad Hoc Committee of Parliament about corruption and political interference within SAPS, Cachalia addressed the National Council of Provinces, committing to address gangsterism in the Western Cape.

‘A Moment of Crisis That Calls for a Reset’

Cachalia acknowledged that Mkhwanazi’s testimony had brought to light a “moment of crisis” for the police service.

“Many people might say, well, every time there’s a new broom, the new broom wants to sweep everything. I think we are in a moment where a reset is required on many questions in the country,” he said.

The minister stressed that the Madlanga Commission presents a critical chance for police leadership to confront the truth and begin the process of rebuilding.

“We should not behave like ostriches, burying our heads in the sand. Let’s stare the truth in the face. Let’s recognise in this crisis there’s an opportunity to rebuild and reset,” Cachalia added.

Cachalia also warned that organised crime has begun to infiltrate government systems, particularly procurement processes, posing a severe threat to national security.

He emphasised the need for SAPS to develop a robust structure capable of addressing these modern challenges, saying the force must be reoriented to protect the integrity of the state.

“The SAPS needs to develop a structure that can address this new challenge,” the police minister said, underscoring the importance of reform and strong leadership within the police service.
