Cachalia: Police Corruption Inquiries Offer A Crucial Chance To Reset SAPS

Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has expressed optimism that ongoing investigations into police corruption could mark a turning point for the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Cachalia said that the Madlanga Commission and Parliament’s ad hoc committee were asking the right questions to uncover the core issues within the police force. He made the remarks while briefing the National Assembly’s police portfolio committee on SAPS’s annual report on Monday.

He noted that although the police had achieved consecutive unqualified audits, corruption continued to undermine the credibility of the service. Cachalia emphasised the need for deep introspection within SAPS to address systemic challenges.

Investigations Seen as Catalyst for Change in SAPS

“The two inquiries will help give the police a chance to start over,” Cachalia said. “It will present us with a difficult moment.

“I think it provides us with an opportunity to reset. Many of the issues raised in the committee today are precisely the right ones that will require attention going forward.”

The acting minister said the investigations underway in Pretoria and in Parliament would help expose the root causes of dysfunction and pave the way for reform. He added that the process could also foster transparency and public confidence in the police.

Cachalia acknowledged that any meaningful reset must also address the low morale among police officers. “For any reset, we have to rebuild the morale,” he said.

The acting minister is expected to appear before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption later this week, following Deputy Minister Polly Boshielo’s testimony on Tuesday.
