Bus Driver Arrested After Assaulting Traffic Officer On N1 South In Limpopo

A Limpopo traffic officer was assaulted by a bus driver while attending to a road emergency on the N1 South at Ysterberg on Workers’ Day.

The officer had been deployed to manage traffic around a jackknifed abnormal vehicle during one of the province’s busiest travel periods, often referred to as Weekend Ya Ma-Workers.

According to provincial transport authorities, the incident unfolded when the officer attempted to stop a bus transporting schoolchildren.

Departmental spokesperson Mashudu Mabata said the driver failed to comply with instructions.

“The driver ignored the officer’s instruction, pushed forward, and forced the officer to step back to protect his life,” said Mabata.

Bus Driver Allegedly Assaults Officer After Confrontation

After the bus was eventually brought to a stop, the situation escalated.

Mabata said the driver exited the vehicle, confronted the officer, and physically attacked him after accusing him of abusing his authority.

Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye condemned the incident in strong terms.

“This is thuggery of the highest order. You do not push, shove, or fight a traffic officer in uniform. You do not endanger school children because you refuse to obey the law.”

“This behaviour is criminal, cowardly, and will be met with the full might of the law. I am disgusted that on Workers’ Day, a day of solidarity, we have a driver attacking the very people deployed to keep workers and children safe.”

Breakdown Crew Intervenes as Bus Driver Taken Into Custody

The assault was halted when a nearby breakdown team, working on the jackknifed vehicle, stepped in and restrained the situation before it escalated further.

Mathye praised the group for their swift response.

“While fixing a broken truck under pressure, these technicians chose to protect a public servant. They are true heroes of Weekend Ya Ma-Workers.”

“Their bravery prevented further harm. We thank them for their courage and service to the people of Limpopo.”

The driver was arrested at the scene, and a case has been opened at Westernburg Police Station on charges of failing to comply with a lawful instruction and assault.

He remains in custody.

Meanwhile, the injured officer is receiving treatment at Limpopo Mediclinic, with support from the department’s Employee Assistance Programme.

Authorities have reiterated calls for motorists to cooperate with law enforcement officers.

“Non-cooperation costs lives and leads to violence. Respect the uniform. Respect the law. Or face arrest,” Mathye said.
